Every year my soul sister, poetry therapist Wendi Kaplan of Alexandria, VA, circulates a New Year’s poem. This is her 2016 selection. I love it!
Prescription for the Disillusioned
Come new to this
day. Remove the rigid
overcoat of experience,
the notion of knowing,
the beliefs that cloud
Leave behind the stories
of your life. Spit out the
sour taste of unmet expectation.
Let the stale scent of what-ifs
waft back into the swamp
of your useless fears.
Arrive curious, without the armor
of certainty, the plans and planned
results of the life you’ve imagined.
Live the life that chooses you, new
every breath, every blink of
your astonished eyes.
– Rebecca del Rio
- Begin a write, “I come new to this year.”
- What are the “beliefs that cloud/ your vision”? Can you gently and nonjudgmentally challenge them and release what isn’t working?
- What might 2016 be like for you if you allowed yourself to fully “live the life that chooses you”?
